Alice Helena Alexandra Williams (Alys Meirion)

Alice Williams is famous for being a writer, artist, and voluntary welfare worker. Her bardic name was Alys Meirion.

  • 1905: She joined the Lyceum, a newly founded social club for women.
  • 1909–10: Meets Fanny Mowbray Laming, a half-French musician and public speaker who became her life companion.
  • 1914: She was in Munich when Britain declared war on Germany.
  • 1915: She established 'Le Signal', a bureau to assist those looking for missing people because of the war.
  • Alice was awarded a Médaille de la Reconnaissance Française (Medal of French Gratitude) for her work with 'Le Signal'.
  • 1917: She established a branch of the Women’s Institute at Deudraeth, the fourth branch in Wales.
  • 1917: She was admitted to the Gorsedd of Bards as a 'dramatist', adopting the name Alys Meirion.
  • 1919: Launched the magazine 'Home and Country', and the 'Forum Club for Women' with Fanny.
  • She was the first woman to be elected to the committees of both St George’s and St Edward’s hospitals in London.
  • 1939: Her partner, Fanny Laming, and her brother, Dr Leonard Williams, die.
