Augustus Edwin John

During the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th, Augustus Edwin John was considered amongst the most important and influential artists in Britain.

Augustus John

• 1894: Goes to London to study art at the Slade School of Fine Art.
• 1901: Marries Ida Nettleship.
• 1901: Appointed to teach art at Liverpool University.
• 1902: The birth of his son, David. Meets Dorothy McNeill (Dorelia), who became his most important model and lifelong inspiration.
• 1907: The death of his wife, Ida, whilst giving birth to their fifth child.
• Dorelia becomes Augustus’s wife in all but name.
• 1911: The family lived at Alderney Manor, Dorset.
• 1927: The family moved to Fryern Court, Hampshire, Augustus nonetheless spending much of his time in his studio in London.
• 1928: Elected as a full member of the Royal Academy.
• 1938: Resigned from the Royal Academy.
• 1940: Reinstated as a member of the Royal Academy.
• 1942: Awarded the Order of Merit for his services to art.
