David Lloyd George

David Lloyd George is famous for being the first Welshman to be the Prime Minister of Britain, during the First World War.

  • 1864: David Lloyd George’s father dies. His mother and the children move to live with her brother, Richard Lloyd in Llanystumdwy.
  • 1884: Passed his Law examinations with honours.
  • 1888: Married Margaret Owen, and they had 5 children.
  • 1890: As the Liberal Parliamentary candidate he won the Caernarfon Boroughs seat at the General Election.
  • 1908: David Lloyd George is appointed Chancellor of the Exchequor.
  • 1915: He is appointed Minister of Munitions as part of the first ever coalition Government, and he succeeded Lord Kitchener as Secretary for War.
  • 1916: Lloyd George became Prime Minister. He was responsible for the unity of command for the allied forces.
  • 1921: He succeeded in getting the Irish Treaty signed in December.
  • 1922: Resigned as Prime Minister.
  • 1936: Visited Germany, and meets Hitler.
  • He continued to be a Member of Parliament until January 1945.
