Jimmy Wilde

Jimmy Wilde is famous for being a boxer, the world flyweight champion between 1916 and 1923.

  • He went to work at the colliery. He worked with Dai Davies, an old mountain fighter who taught him a great deal about boxing and invited him home to practice in the attic.
  • After Jimmy’s family split, he lodged at Dai Davies’s house and later married Dai’s daughter, Lisbeth.
  • 1907: He had an accident at work and was laid up for over a year, waiting for his leg to heal.
  • He had 864 contests in his unbelievable career, weighing only 7 stones 10 pounds.
  • 1914: He won the British Flyweight Championship by beating Joe Symmonds.
  • 1915: He lost his title to Tancy Lee in the 17th round. This was the first contest he had lost.
  • 1916: He beat Joe Symmonds to regain the title, and in January got his revenge on Tancy Lee in the 11th round.
  • Late 1916: By then an army physical training instructor, he beat Young Zulu Kid from the USA in the 11th round to win the World Flyweight Championship.
  • 1920: He went on a boxing tour of the USA and beat all his opponents without much difficulty.
  • 1921: He was beaten in the 17th round by Pete Herman of the USA.
  • 1923: For £15,000, he decided to go to New York and defend his title against Pancho Villa. Jimmy lost in the 7th round.
  • 1938: Wrote his autobiography, 'Boxing was my Business'.
