John Roberts (Alaw Elwy, Telynor Cymru)

John Roberts is famous for being a musician. He was also called Alaw Elwy (Melody of Elwy), and Telynor Cymru (Harpist of Wales).

• He started his career in the ‘Royal Welch Fusiliers’ where he spent nine and a half years.
• On his release from the army, he settled in Newtown and lived there for the rest of his life.
• 1834: He played the harp before Queen Victoria at Portsmouth, 1834, and twice at Winchester in 1835.
• He became a noted harpist and an excellent singer of ‘penillion’ (verses sung to the accompaniment of the harp).
• 1842: He won the triple harp competition at the Abergavenny Eisteddfod.
• 1847: He played the harp before Duke Constantine of Russia at Aberystwyth.
• 1848: He won the main prize at the Eisteddfod. He also played the harp before the King of Belgium.
• 1850: He won the harp competition at the Cardiff Eisteddfod.
• 1886: He was invested as ‘Telynor Cymru’ in a bardic ‘gorsedd’ (a council of bards and druids) held on the shores of Llyn Geirionydd.
• 1889: He taught nine of his children to play the harp, the violin and the flute and they gave a concert before Queen Victoria at Pale, Llandderfel.
