Megan Arfon Lloyd George

Megan was famous for being the first female Member of Parliament from Wales and for campaigning for women’s rights. Her father, David Lloyd George, was the British Prime Minister between 1916 and 1922.

  • She was the youngest daughter of David Lloyd George.
  • 1919: She was educated in Paris, after leaving Garrett’s Hall School in Banstead.
  • 1928: She became the Member of Parliament (MP) for Anglesey, the first woman to represent Wales at Westminster.
  • 1951: She lost her seat to Cledwyn Hughes of the Labour Party.
  • 1955: Megan joined the Labour Party.
  • 1955: She was appointed President of the New Wales Union (Undeb Cymru Fydd), which campaigned for a Parliament for Wales.
  • 1956: In April, she was part of the group which presented the petition with a quarter of a million signatures to the government.
  • 1957: She succeeded in becoming MP for Carmarthen and held the seat until her death.
  • 1966: Her popularity was obvious; an immense crowd came to the cemetery on the day of her funeral, which included Gwynfor Evans, who became MP for Carmarthen in her place.
