Waldo Williams

Waldo was a poet and pacifist from Pembrokeshire. He was often referred to by his first name only.

Waldo Williams

• 1923: He went to the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth to study English and History.
• He edited the magazine ‘The Dragon’ during his time at university and published his poems anonymously in the magazine.
• Early 1930s: He published a series of poems in ‘Y Ford Gron’ (The Round Table).
• 1936: Waldo and his friend, E. Llwyd Williams, wrote a book of poetry for children, ‘Cerddi’r Plant’ (Children’s Poems).
• 1942: He was exempted from military service on the condition that he continued with his work as a teacher.
• 1945: He left Wales to work in schools in England.
• 1949: He returned to Wales.
• 1956: He published his most famous work, ‘Dail Pren’ (The Leaves of the Tree).
• 1959: He stood as a Plaid Cymru candidate in the General Election.
• 2010: Cymdeithas Waldo Williams (The Waldo Williams Society) was created with the aim of continuing to promote his work and vision.
